Things change! I had been threatening to write a book about the characters I play golf with all of
last year, but this year I got serous about it.
I actually began the project in earnest last fall when I made some notes about a golf outing with
my son in Tennessee. That was to provide the preamble to the book which would have somewhat serious
sounding title Breaking 100 but would in fact be a collection of funny stories about the fellows who play
Seniors Golf on Tuesday Mornings at Lake of the Sand hills Golf Course. If I do break 100 (which I
seriously hope to) it will be a bit of bonus. The real intent here is to collect stories about the group of
fellows who gather on Tuesday mornings and play golf.
Though we moved here 6 years ago, I did not join the group because I did not feel adequate in
my golf skills. They encouraged me and after two outings I was hooked nearly as solidly as my tee shots.
I found them a tolerant group and they even invited me to play in the annual completion against our
American neighbors.
It was a great experience I was paired against Larry, the most handicapped gofer (is that the right
term for highest handicap?) on the American team and I was able to save the day for the Canadian side by
administering a solid beating of two strokes on Larry.
Then I was invited to join the return match in Minnesota, on his own course Larry was
formidable and won our match a dozen or so strokes, but it is not about the score it is about the
camaraderie, even if the looser has to buy the refreshments.
That is what Tuesday Senior Golf is about the characters you meet and in preparation I had
assigned a notebook to Breaking 100. I had made the early entries but then things changed with the
advent of Covid 19 and the social distancing rules. So it may mean that the notebook will indeed have
notes about me trying to better my golf score rather than the stories that get shared over a pitcher of beer
or a hot dog in the club house.
Things change and they have this year! So what I had intend to be a collection of humorous
stories about my efforts on the course might in fact be come a collection of things that worked to improve
my score and bring it to less than 100. Doug at Senior Golf says less than 10% of golfers score under 100.
I might not make it and if I don’t there will be great stories on the course this year. That is the way writing
is, sometimes you have to change the way you approach a topic and wait for something else to happen.
The fashionable clothes will still be a hit…
